China Kunming new Pentathlon facility Image: UIPM

The International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) (Monaco) is looking towards China.

‘Francs Jeux’ stated that the UIPM recently announced that it has reached an agreement with the province of Yunnan (China), in the South-West of the country, for the construction of a new facility dedicated to the discipline.

The International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) has been the international governing body of modern pentathlon since its foundation in London (UK) in 1948. Its headquarters are in Monte-Carlo, Monaco, and it has 115 national federation members.

‘Francs Jeux’ further stated that the planned facility will come up in the City of Kunming in China. It will be constructed to serve as the UIPM’s development center for Asia-Pacific and will facilitate high-altitude training sessions and the organisation of world, continental and national high-level competitions.

As is often the case with sports projects in China, the above development is also massive. The UIPM center in Kunming will boast a 10,000-seat stadium, a swimming pool with a 5,000-seat stand and a training complex under one roof. It is expected to accommodate up to 300,000 athletes per year.

The complex will also enjoy a dedicated rehabilitation and nutrition facility, flats for athletes, a hotel, and shops. The main stadium is expected to be completed by mid-2024. The sporting part of the complex should be completed by the end of 2024 and by the end of 2025 the rest of the complex is expected to be complete.
