The new home of the professional basketball team based in Valencia, Spain – the Valencia Basket – will be called the Roig Arena after the Spanish billionaire businessman Juan Roig who has picked up the tab of the project. The inauguration of the facility is scheduled for 2024.

‘Roig Arena’ stated that Licampa 1617, a company owned by Juan Roig, the Mercadona supermarket chain owner (Spanish supermarket chain), who also is the largest shareholder of Valencia Basket, has opted for the name ‘Roig Arena’ and not Casal España Arena, the future multipurpose venue which is being built in Valencia, Spain. The team plays in the Liga ACB and the EuroLeague, with home games played at the Pavelló Municipal Font de Sant Lluís. The club is sponsored by the Spanish billionaire Juan Roig.

The Pavelló Municipal Font de Sant Lluís is an indoor arena that is located in Valencia, Spain. Built in 1983, it is primarily used for basketball games, and it is the home arena of the Spanish Liga ACB club Valencia Basket. The arena has a seating capacity of 9,000 people.

The price tag of the Roig Arena, which has been pegged at more than 280 million euros, fully paid for by Juan Roig with his personal wealth, will host all types of events, internationally positioning Valencia and the Valencian Community.

‘Roig Arena’ further stated that additionally, according to a latest report by the Valencian Institute for Economic Research (Ivie), this venue (which will be handed over to the City of Valencia after 50 years), will contribute to generating approximately 300 jobs (direct and indirect) and an economic impact (Gross Domestic Product – GDP) in the City of Valencia of over 10 million euros annually.

Works on the venue are currently in their second phase of execution – focused on the concrete and metal structure, roof, façade, and formwork of the floors – after completion of the first phase, focused on the excavation, pile driving, screening walls, and foundation slabs. The Phase Three work is yet to start, focused on completion of the arena.

Revitalized Neighborhood

In addition to construction of the Roig Arena venue, the execution of additional infrastructure to revitalize the neighborhood is being planned, such as the car park with over 1,000 spaces which is now under construction, the future public park with green areas, the new home of the Valencia Basket Club, a multipurpose hall for various uses of over 1,200 square meters, restaurant areas, and a wide range of premises, terraces and premium areas.

Roig Legacy

Licampa 1617, the Juan Roig company in charge of the project, has communicated the new name, explaining the change, “The new name responds to the need to establish a clear, simple, identifiable name that recognizes the legacy of Juan Roig and his family.”

Roig aims to share some of the large profits it earns with the City of Valencia and the Valencian Community, because “knowledge and money bring happiness… if you share them”.
