FC Barcelona and Plastiks enter NFT partnership Image: Coliseum GSVA

The LaLiga club FC Barcelona (Spain) has teamed up with the plastic recovery platform company Plastiks in a groundbreaking non-fungible tokens (NFT) partnership aimed at engaging fans and promoting sustainability solutions through Web3 technology. The collaboration seeks to empower supporters to contribute to environmental causes while enjoying exclusive benefits.

‘blog.cryptoflies.com’ stated that the joint initiative introduces ‘Unleash Your Passion’, an NFT collection that showcases digital collectibles featuring various animals – such as tigers, zebras, turtles, monkeys, and more. The collection comprises 3,000 NFTs, and each purchase will help eliminate a staggering 35,000,000 kilograms of plastic from the planet.

Futbol Club Barcelona, commonly referred to as Barcelona and colloquially known as Barça, is a professional football club based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, that competes in LaLiga, the top flight of Spanish football.

The Camp Nou (which is presently undergoing total renovation), branded as Spotify Camp Nou for sponsorship reasons, is the home of the LaLiga club FC Barcelona since its completion in 1957. With a current seating capacity of 99,354, it is the stadium with the largest capacity in Spain and Europe, and the second largest football stadium in the world.

Barcelona (Spain)-based Plastiks mission is to connect people and businesses all around the world to fight plastic pollution by supporting plastic recovery activities through technology and NFTs. By providing plastic recovery with full transparency, the company aim to increase the traceability and accountability within the value chain of plastics and challenge the market of plastic credits.

The NFTs or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are a kind of cryptocurrency that represents a one-of-a-kind digital asset or unique piece of artwork. Fiat and cryptocurrencies are mainly used for transactional purposes and are fungible, which means each unit can be interchanged.

Fiat currency (or fiat money) is Government-controlled money such as the US dollar and other national currencies. Generally, fiat money derives its value from the decisions of Central Banks, rather than through reserves of assets such as gold.

Web3 has become a catch-all term for the vision of a new, better Internet. At its core, Web3 uses blockchains, cryptocurrencies and NFTs to give power back to the users in the form of ownership.

A blockchain is a decentralized, distributed and public digital ledger that is used to record transactions across many computers so that the record cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks and the consensus of the network.

‘blog.cryptoflies.com’ further stated that buyers will have the opportunity to select their favorite animal-themed NFT and decide which environmental project they want to support in cleaning up the planet.

In addition to fostering sustainability, the NFT holders will gain access to a range of rewards and perks, including limited edition content. They will also have the chance to enter a draw for one of 10 jerseys signed by select FC Barcelona men’s first-team players.

The ‘Unleash Your Passion’ NFT collection is now available for purchase on the Plastiks marketplace, with each NFT priced at $30.

This marks FC Barcelona’s second venture into the realm of Web3 technology, following the successful auction of the unique ‘In a Way, Immortal’ NFT in July 2022.

Furthermore, in a sign of the footballing giants’ growing interest in Web3, both Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona jointly filed a trademark application in August 2022 to enter the metaverse.

In Science fiction, the ‘metaverse’ is a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal and immersive virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets.

Meanwhile, Plastiks has been forging partnerships to further its Web3 project focused on environmental sustainability. In June 2022, the company collaborated with Hotel Lancaster (Paris, France) to introduce a collection of NFTs that offered unique luxury experiences in Paris’ finest hotels while simultaneously combating plastic waste.
