The Italian Serie A club Como 1907 is all set to increase the capacity of their residence – the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in Como, Italy – to circa 12,000 from the beginning of the next season.

‘IL GIORNO’ stated that the Como home went through redecoration work last Summer prior to the club’s return to Serie A. The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia capacity had risen from 7,498 to 10,584.

The Como 1907 is an Italian professional football club based in Como, Lombardy (Italy). The club competes in the Serie A, the first tier of Italian football, after achieving promotion in the 2023-2024 Serie B seasons.

The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia is a multiuse stadium in Como, Italy. It is primarily used for football matches as the home ground of the Como 1907. The stadium has a capacity to accommodate 10,759 spectators and has served as the home arena of Como since it opened its doors in 1927.

‘IL GIORNO’ further stated that next season there will be a further rise in Como’s home field capacity with around 1,200 more seats to be added. The right-hand section of the away fans stand is also set to be reopened.

Como is returning to Serie A this season after a 21-year drought.

The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia sits amidst sylvan surroundings on the shores of Lake Como against a quaint setting. But, the venue requires significant redevelopment work in order to be able to stage Serie A matchups. The stadium encapsulates Como 1907’s deep roots within its City.

Since the Como home venue leaves much to be desired the top-flight played the first three matches of the season away from home and returned to Sinigaglia for a fixture against their peer team – the Bologna FC 1909 – on September 14th.

In February the club along with the Municipality of Como and the design firm Populous presented initial concepts for the revamp of the Sinigaglia with the goal of ensuring the venue remains “a vital part of the community”.

The design and approval process is expected to be completed by May 2026 which will be followed by a two-stage construction exercise. The first phase is expected to be over by October 2027 and the project completion is scheduled to be complete by August 2028.

The Como wants a totally refurbished look for the Sinigaglia with a capacity to hold 15,000 to 20,000 spectators. The club’s Owners, the Hartono brothers, are expected to pick up the majority of the stadium expansion tab.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers as well as in the planning and design of major special events.
