NFL plans game in Germany Image: NFL

The National Football League (NFL) (US) is setting its sights on Germany and chances are brightening of an NFL fixture on German soil. The League has named two specific locations in Germany recently – Munich and Berlin – and in one of these places venue an NFL matchup will be played.

‘ran’ stated that a long-cherished dream of staunch NFL fans in Germany is to watch a match in Munich. What was wishful thinking on the part of hardcore fans so far may soon become a reality as early as 2022.

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference.

An NFL memo stated that the League is interested in organizing a match either in Berlin or Munich. Apart from the two NFL games being planned to be played at the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London (UK), one game is being planned at the 87,523-capacity Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (Mexico), and one matchup is being planned to be staged either in Munich or Berlin.

‘ran’ further stated that due to the restructuring of the League to 17 games, the NFL is looking to extend its vistas outside of the United States. Once a final decision is made on the venues outside of the US, games are likely to be held on a rotational basis.

For Mexico and UK, the NFL venues have been spelt out. But, for Germany, no venue has been fixed as yet – though a venue in Berlin or Munich will in all probability hold an NFL game. However, the 75,024-capacity Allianz Arena in Munich (Germany) has been ruled out for the same.

The 69,250-capacity Munich Olympic Stadium is likely to hold an NFL match, but to be able to play host to the same, it will have to be totally rehabilitated.

The two Olympic stadiums in Munich and Berlin are much more likely, although the former requires a thorough renovation. Apart from hosting a few third division games of the German association football club Türkgücü München, no big-ticket sporting events has been held in the venue since 2005.

The Olympiastadion in Berlin (Germany) is a hot favorite for staging an NFL fixture. Apart from holding 74,000 spectators, it is holding major events the year through being the home of the top-flight Bundesliga club Hertha BSC.

Though no official announcement has been made so far, but an NFL game will soon be held in Germany – that is for sure.
