Iceland stadium major embellishment works

A sod-turning ceremony was held recently to lend a 360 degree transformation to the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Reykjavík, Iceland.

‘stjornarradid.is’ stated that with the groundbreaking ceremony held the first phase construction of the stadium has begun to lend a total new look.

The Laugardalsvöllur Stadium is Iceland’s national football stadium and the home venue for the Iceland national football team and is located in Reykjavík, Iceland. It has a seating capacity of 9,500 for football and about 28,321 for concerts.

A new hybrid grass pitch will come up in the above facility and a pitch heating system will be installed under the field.

‘stjornarradid.is’ further stated that the objective of the total transformation work of the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Iceland is to make it almost a 365-days-a-year facility and the first phase construction work is expected to be completed before the national football team’s matches next Summer. The venue will be revamped as a soccer-specific stadium only and plans are being drawn up for a new national athletics stadium to be built at Laugardalur in Reykjavík.

The Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, the Minister of Education and Children’s Affairs, Ásmundur Einar Daðason, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, the City of Reykjavík, the Football Association of Iceland (the governing body of football in Iceland), and the Icelandic Athletic Federation (governing body for the sport of athletics in Iceland) signed a declaration of intent on the above in the beginning of September.

The State and the City of Reykjavík will each invest up to 250 million ISK in the first phase construction work and the Football Association of Iceland will oversee the work.

The beginning of the first phase construction work of the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium has paved the way for the development of the arena as a future national soccer stadium. Premium facilities will be added to the stadium that meets the benchmarks of the international sports federations to facilitate hosting of major sporting events as well as to enhance the fan experience.
