Shane Richardson, the head honcho of the Australian professional rugby league football team Wests Tigers, has admitted that the team could leave one of their spiritual homes of Campbelltown Sports Stadium in South Western Sydney, Australia, unless an upgrade is greenlit soon as the venue is not up to scratch.

‘WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS’ stated that one of the multiple home grounds used by the joint venture club there are fears it could fall by the wayside due to it not being “fit-for-purpose”, according to the club.

The Wests Tigers is an Australian professional rugby league football team based in the Inner West of Sydney and South Western Sydney (Australia).

The 17,500-capacity Campbelltown Sports Stadium is a multipurpose stadium in Leumeah, a suburb in South Western Sydney, Australia, owned by the Campbelltown City Council. It serves as the home ground of the Wests Tigers.

The club also play home games at the 20,000-capacity Leichhardt Oval in Lilyfield, New South Wales, Australia, and the 30,000-capacity CommBank Stadium in Parramatta, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

‘WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS’ further stated that the club, along with the National Rugby League (NRL) and the Campbelltown Council, are seeking an investment of $50 million over the next three years and $100 million over the next decade.

Sydney (Australia)-based the National Rugby League (NRL) is a professional rugby league competition in Oceania which contains clubs from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and New Zealand.

Upgrades to the stadium would see it seat 24,000 fans and 1,500 corporate guests and the Tigers are seeking a commitment by the end of June.

If the upgrade is ticked off the Tigers will play up to nine games there each season across both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Chief Executive Richardson explained the current set-up at Campbelltown was not up to scratch for the NRL – “We want to play out of the Campbelltown Stadium as part of our strategic plan. However, we cannot do this under the current stadium setup. A modern venue will unlock much-needed revenue through corporate hospitality, enhance the matchday experience and increase the broadcast value. As the game continues to evolve so must the Wests Tigers. If we want to compete at the highest level against the other NRL clubs based in the modern venues we need to address the financial advantage those clubs currently have.”
