The future Spotify Camp Nou project was the focus of attention at the Coliseum Summit Europe in London this week.

FC Barcelona said the new stadium was presented to the international congress to allow specialists from all over the world to find out more about the main architectural details of the Blaugranes’ new home

The Spotify Camp Nou project, its current progress and the main features of the Espai Barça project were presented at the Coliseum Summit Europe, an even organised by the Coliseum Global Sports Venue Alliance and which took place on 26-27 March at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

The international congress looks at the latest trends and opportunities in stadium and arena construction and at the event, FC Barcelona was represented by Raul Alvarez who is in charge of the technical aspects of the Espai Barça project.

The world-famous Camp Nou, branded as Spotify Camp Nou for sponsorship reasons, has been the home of the LaLiga club FC Barcelona since its completion in 1957. With a current seating capacity of 99,354, it is the stadium with the largest capacity in Spain and Europe, and the third largest football stadium in the world.

The Espai Barça project is a large-scale infrastructure redevelopment project to improve (and expand) all of FC Barcelona’s infrastructure including their training facilities, the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium, the Palau Blaugrana, the club’s offices as well as the commercial and leisure facilities.

In his appearance at the congress, Alvarez spoke about the technical aspects of the project, explaining the current state of progress in construction and some of the main details of the new space in the centre of Barcelona, which will become an architectural reference point for the city and beyond.

The Barça representative went into detail about Espai Barça and the transformation it will bring about at FC Barcelona’s facilities in the city neighbourhood of Les Corts.

Key aspects of the project which have been considered in the development of the design include integrating the stadium into the city and promoting more sustainable and socially responsible transport options, with measures to protect the environment.

The specialists and attendees in the sector were able to see first-hand the unique nature of one of the most relevant projects in the world of sport and entertainment as the Club seeks to modernise its home and facilities to create new spaces and activities to generate additional income.

The Espai Barça development plan goes well beyond modernization and reconstruction of FC Barcelona’s home venue Spotify Camp Nou. In addition to increasing the capacity of the current stadium to 105,000 from circa 99,000 and completely revamping the current structure of Spotify Camp Nou, the Espai Barça project entails building a new Palau Blaugrana with a capacity of 15,000, an additional court with a capacity of 2,000, an ice rink, a new social area, a new commercial area, revamped club offices, La Masía (FC Barcelona’s youth academy), and an additional 5,000 parking spots.

This ambitious initiative has been in the works for several years. In April 2014, Espai Barça was approved by the club’s members with a budget of $700 million.

Meeting point for the stadium industry

FC Barcelona further stated that the forums organised by Coliseum Global Sports Venue Alliance are a meeting point for representatives and specialists in the world of sport and entertainment, focusing on the construction of stadia and arenas.

It is an international event that offers a space for debate and analysis of the latest trends and the opportunities for business and growth. As such, new developments in the sector were presented as well as projects currently in progress such as Espai Barça.
